Where and how strong was the earthquake?
In the early afternoon local time, the international earthquake observation services registered tremors of magnitude 7.7 in Myanmar. The German Helmholtz Center for Geo Research (GFZ) located the epicenter of the quake a few kilometers west of Mandalay, the country’s second largest city. Twelve minutes later, the first aftershock of magnitude 6.5 followed, and two more after that. Now, the following one and a half hours. The depth of the earthquake is given by the GFZ at 20 kilometers, but by the USGS at ten.
The tremors were so strong that they were felt in numerous neighboring countries, including Thailand, China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and India. In the Thai capital Bangkok, the earth shook for several minutes.
